Fri 31 Dec 10 (AM) [BRICK]

2:15 hour 40 mile Tri-Bike (Cannondale) ride to Chaney Rd and back (50F long sleeve UA w/ windstopper and long sleeve jersey on top, booties, Oakley type shades). (Got a little tired at 20 mile point & towards the end). followed by 1 hour 6 mile run to base n back. (60F long sleeve Ala thermal top, long Nike tights, Oakley type shades, hammer visor)

Pre: Myoplex/ 50F sunny

Ride: 2- 22 oz water, 4-5 perpeteum solids, 1 GU/vanilla

Run: 1 Snickers Marathon bar (melts in mouth good), 3-4 Perpeteum Solids, 1 GU vanilla, 1 grape Fruit Leather (I like the saliva producing quality of the tart fruit leather)

Slow pacing in the first miles of the run worked out pretty well (9:45-10 min miles)

Outback Distance Classic (Half Marathon) in Jax. There were abt 5K ppl on hand 4 the event. They didn't have the t-shirt size I ordered (foul) had to settle for a Med. I didn't have a great race due to one or more of the following factors: nutrition, humidity/heat, going out too fast, residual fatigue, not enough sleep, who knows. I wasn't feeling it in the 2nd half of the race for some unknown reason. I gutted it out doing some run/walk for the last 4 miles or so. That sucked. Finished @ 1:52:54 or so. Blah.

Sat 13 Nov (Day 2 Savannah Bike Tour)

Were on the road back to St M @ 0700. Wx was cold @ 38F. I took off in front & was never passed (I was trying to warm up (20+) which never really happened). Fortunately I had my booties on which helped slightly with the feet (but not totally). I pulled into Darien (46 mi) in abt 2:30 hours. By this point I was well ahd of the others. I stopped at the Subway & had some soup while I waited. The rest of the guys showed up abt 30 minutes later as I was preparing to leave. Turns out Chuck had locked himself out of his van near the interstate near Riceboro, Ga. So we stayed about another 45 min waiting for Chuck to show post AAA unlocking his van. After getting back on the road we made our way 26 mi S to Brunswick. I was passed when I stopped to get pics & pee at the Getwood Baptist church. I never caught back up until the McDonalds in Brunswick. As we pulled out of town I got in the lead again being passed on the bridge (the tallest bridge in Ga) by one guy who ended up getting a flat on the way down the far side as one of the expansion joints had a crooked plate on top causing a 4" rise which he must have gone over blindly (or bluntly). I passed by at the base roadway departing the causeway & as he had assistance coming to his aid I pressed on. I enjoyed the full sun & the cool conditions through the miles to Waverly stopping for a bathroom break there. Just as I was commencing to depart Terry showed up (the others were some minutes back). We departed together a number of minutes later swapping the lead several times but the pace was too high for him so I was again alone on the road heading for home. My GPS lost battery power about 10 miles from the house. I arrived at home @ 1425 hours having ridden abt 226-7 miles in 2 days. It was a good ride and my legs and endurance were good throughout. One of these days I'd like to do the entire distance from state line to state line.

Day 1 of the Veterans Day Weekend 400K. We met at the bike shop in St Marys. Didn't end up leaving til late as one of the dudes (& passenger) was late arriving 0900. Got over to Hwy 17 hung a left & went down to the state line (Florida) Stopped at all of the memorial parks in the first several towns. That got a bit old. Stopped at too many places and had too many stops. Lunch in Darien (abt mile 60)(Subway) was delayed as well. Did not make it all the way to Savannah as darkness fell. Ended up stopping in Richmond Hill (abt 10 miles S of savannah). I had 120 miles on the Garmim at that point. I felt good at the end and had had good fueling throughout the day.

Feet were literal blocks of ice. Yowzah! Windstopper tech shirt worked like a champ. OR gloves over bike gloves worked well 2. One dude got a flat right in front of the Church coming back in. His blown tire sounded like a gunshot. It scared the crap out of me!

Went out with the Camden bike shop on a fat tire ride commencing @ the boat ramp in Woodbine. I rode out there from St Marys and joined the ride. We went over the bridge, hit a rail to trail section or two following it up past White Oak (the next town up). After making our way back south we tried a little spur road that dropped down to the Satilla River (used to be the rail bed). It was a quad BUSTER (loose gravel about 6" deep). Umm yeah. Then more trail south of town. Got back on 17 n headed back to St Marys. I think I logged 53 miles. Yeah, that was a workout!

Swampman 100 Bike Tour (Macclenney, Florida)

I rode in the Swampman 100 mile bike ride today in Macclenney, Florida (west of Jacksonville). This is my ride report. Arrived at the YMCA in Macclenney to find several hundred enthusiastic bikers of all ages and appearances getting prepared to take on the day. The packet pickup was a breeze and consisted of a paper bag (think lunch sack) with a shirt rolled up inside. Simple is better right? There was a healthily line for the bathroom on the mens side of the house and with only one sit down toilet that was an issue. Fortunately I was in need of #1 only. There was no waiting at the community pool next door which you should consider if you do this event. They had bagels and fruit, coffee etc on hand as well.
At right about 8 AM (too late to start IMO) they told everyone to mount up and make their way out to the roadway for the starting horn. This is not a race but a ride but you wouldn't have known this given the enthusiasm of the bikers as they flocked to get up near the front. A few instructions followed concerning how to interpret the markings on the road. I will repeat them here in the event you have found this post in hopes of gaining info about this event for future consideration. The markings at intersections or turns consisted of a circle with a line branching off of it at the prescribed angle of movement (i.e. a right turn would be a circle with a line at 90 degrees). For those doing the century there was a 100A route which was to be taken first and then a 100B that followed after 100A was completed. This became a fairly simple situation to interpret after you had seen several of them.
The course was just as advertised: flat, scenic, and not much traffic. Everyone went out as a crowd and stayed together for the first 5 miles or so. The spread began from there

Patriots Memorial Bike Ride

Completed the 91.1K bike ride today with about 100 other cyclists. Finished the 56 miles in 2 hrs and 44 minutes. It was good and I felt strong at the end. Some bonus material from Scott Dunlap's trail running blog:

I was surprisingly comfortable by the first buoy, picking a line wide of the fast guys and finding a nice aerobic rhythm. Clearly the month I had squeezed in at the pool, thanks to stealing away during Sophie's swim lessons, had given me a base to work with. I was also trying the "lesson of threes" that I had picked up from some Ironman veterans who had given me some pointers on how to use a practice race to determine my best goal pace:
Split the distance of each discipline into thirds
Swim/bike/run the first third of the discipline at a pace slightly slower than your goal
Take the middle section at your goal pace
If you feel good, go a little harder on the last third.
The goal is to save enough energy that you can be comfortable transitioning, then enter the run knowing you could run a marathon within 15% of a marathon best effort. For example, I should be able to come off the bike feeling like I could run a 3 hour marathon (15% off my marathon PR) if I gave it everything.
If you don't feel good enough to do this, then you're going too fast too early in the game. This is where 5 minutes in the swim, or 15 minutes on the bike, could cost you an hour in the run when you're walking

1:22hr/9.63mi AM run. Banana pre (needed more). 193 pre wt 190.5 post. Legs got heavy near end. 20 oz of water not sufficient either. Need 2 water bottles w/ 1 Perpeteum at least.

Triathlon Training

TriathlonImage via WikipediaI am now entering the 2nd month of concentrated training for several events next year. It feels great to have a goal and to be working my way towards it. Having the opportunity to train in multiple events is also keeping the training fresh.

Sat 4 Sep 10 (PM)

3:50hrs/72.91mi tri-bike ride fm St Marys to Brunswick (36 mi) and back. Used new Profile Design dual holster water bottle holder (saddle mounted) and it is SWEET! Was able to maintain 20 MPH throughout. Glad to have 4 bottles. They were all needed/used! Got a 91.1 mi ride next Saturday. 190.8 pounds post.

59.03 min/15.56 mi mtn bike ride (PM). Vanilla #hammer gel & #Propel kiwi strawberry. Good ride on base n the neighborhood. Legs felt goos throughout. Boned it pretty bad this AM but the PM session was better.

hour/7.16 mi AM run. Legs got heavy @ end. Wanted 2 stop but pressed on anyway. Note 2 self: use gel next time. Must continue to stress the system to encourage adaptation. That being said, it's gotta be done the right way or at very least the smart way. I know! The right smart way! That's the ticket. . #tri #IM0

2 hour / 40 mile tri bike ride to Chaney Road (N of Woodbine). Legs felt good throughout and finished strong. Light drizzle start to finish so no ipod. Visited several bike shops on the way back fm Orlando earlier today. There are some spendy bikes out there (5K+).
